Nailing Down The Necessities

Bud Robinson once said "I’d rather know a few things for certain than to know a lot of things that aren’t so"

We know some things that are certain. Our world is in a constant state of change and confusion but we do not have to be unsettled by the unsettling.

We have some things which we have been taught that are verifiable through solid Bible doctrine and have been proven in our own lives.

A few of those things are:

1. God created everything

If it exists, God created it.

Without Him, there would be nothing.

2. God knows everything

He will never be surprised by something He reads in the latest medical journal or sees on Nova.

God knows all about every aspect of your life.

3. God’s Word is a portable resource center

If it’s knowledge, it’s in there.

If it’s power, it’s in there.

If it’s companionship, it’s in there.

If it’s virtues, they’re in there

If it’s supplies, they’re in there.

The Word of God is a ‘mall without walls’.

4. God can do anything

He is a God of the everyday - Letting us use His air, His food, all of the things we take for granted.

Then He is the God of the miraculous - doing the supernatural on our behalf.

5. God has a big clock
 that works on DST

(That is Divine Standard Time)

God is a skilled timekeeper; can you be a submissive God watcher?

He is aware of every detail of our lives and will work on them if we can wait for Him.

But, He is working on His time-table!

6. God is Love

His ability to communicate this unbelievable characteristic is beyond our minuscule abilities.

I have been enraptured by His love and enfolded by His care.

There is only one God.

Anything else is simply an alternative philosophy which in time transforms worshipers into zombies

On the other hand, Jesus empowers us to go further and achieve more in both the physical and spiritual realms.

No matter what it may be that life will bring to you, don’t forget that you are not alone, for an omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent God has said that He will never leave you.

7. God is eternal

There is no yesterday or tomorrow with Him.

Everything is today!

He is not weakened by the journey, nor impoverished by the cost, neither deterred by the obstacles.

These are but a few of the certainties which we have nailed down.

Pillow your head on this most glorious portion of God’s Word.

Isa.40:26 - 31

Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth. Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from the LORD, and my judgment is passed over from my God? Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

Obscure Indispensables

We are a people who love to sort out, rank, label, categorize, and organize. We identify a day as being a good day, a bad day, or average.  We have a grading system for everything and everybody in our lives. With that in mind let us look at some Bible incidents that I have placed in the category of ‘obscure' yet ‘indispensable'.

The word obscure means ‘not clearly seen, or hidden.'

The word indispensable means ‘absolutely necessary, or essential'.

In each case that we will examine here, the outcome would have been unbelievably different had this one element been taken out of the equation.

Come, explore with me.

1. A Ram

Genesis 22:

13. And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.

14. And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.

The provision was so obscure that Abraham did not even see it until God pointed it out to him.

What are you missing out on that thru your disobedience you have not made God your spotter?

2.  A Scarlet Cord

Joshua 2:

18. Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father's household, home unto thee.

21. And she said, According unto your words, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed: and she bound the scarlet line in the window.

22. But Joshua had said unto the two men that had spied out the country, Go into the harlot's house, and bring out thence the woman, and all that she hath, as ye sware unto her.

25. And Joshua saved Rahab the harlot alive, and her father's household, and all that she had; and she dwelleth in Israel even unto this day; because she hid the messengers, which Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.

In a battle where so many other objects catch your attention, the eye of God sees the obscure scarlet line.

3. The Jawbone

Judges 15:

15. And he found a new jawbone of an ass, and put forth his hand, and took it, and slew a thousand men therewith.

In its lifetime that which had been a symbol of its stubborn nature (the setting of the jaw) became in the hand of God's man a weapon of mass destruction.

Maybe you have set your jaw to have your own way and thus lost the ability to gain great victory in your life.

4. Empty Pitchers & Lamps

Judges 7:
16. And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet in every man's hand, with empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers.

17. And he said unto them, Look on me, and do likewise: and, behold, when I come to the outside of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so shall ye do.

18. When I blow with a trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow ye the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon.

19. So Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto the outside of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch; and they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers that were in their hands.

20. And the three companies blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers, and held the lamps in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands to blow withal: and they cried, The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon.

21. And they stood every man in his place round about the camp: and all the host ran, and cried, and fled.

It does not take a large crowd to win the battle, just an unified effort.
5. An Ox Goad

Judges 3:

31. And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also delivered Israel.

A small stick that the park attendants use to pick up papers with can prove to be indispensable in your Christian living.

Many times we look too far afield for some magic wand or formula when we hold the answer in our own sweaty little paws.

6. Aaron's Rod

Ex.7:

10. And Moses and Aaron went in unto Pharaoh, and they did so as the LORD had commanded: and Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh, and before his servants, and it became a serpent.

11. Then Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers: now the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments.

12. For they cast down every man his rod, and they became serpents: but Aaron's rod swallowed up their rods.

Things that others fear, can for you, become your salvation.

But you must have the faith to take hold of your support.

7. The Widow's Meal

1 Kings 17:

10.So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.

11. And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thine hand.

12. And she said, As the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.

13. And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son.

14. For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth.

15. And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days.

16.And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Elijah.

An act of faith may appear to be a display of foolishness, but the end results are far different.

Your human reasoning may prompt you to ignore the obscure handle of faith in the stretch to make ends meet.

8. A Pot Of Oil

 II Kings 4:

1. Now there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the LORD: and the creditor is come to take unto him my two sons to be bondmen.

2. And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thine handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil.

3. Then he said, Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbours, even empty vessels; borrow not a few.

4. And when thou art come in, thou shalt shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels, and thou shalt set aside that which is full.

5. So she went from him, and shut the door upon her and upon her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured out.

6. And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, Bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, There is not a vessel more. And the oil stayed.

7. Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy children of the rest.

Sometimes it requires the surrender of what you have to receive what you need.
9. A Lad's Lunch

John 6:9

There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?

Hold this lunch in front of such a throng, and it's like offering a crumpet to a coronation crowd.

But place it in the hands of the Royal Regalement Regulator, and it becomes a meal for a multitude.

10. A Widow's Mite

Luke 21:

1. And he looked up, and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury.

2. And he saw also a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites.

3. And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all:

4. For all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had.

When He looks at our finite offerings, what He sees is not what He gets but what He projects.

There is no way to measure the impact the unseen hand of God has on our daily lives. Whether it be a crisis situation or just a typical day, your level of living will be dramatically improved by God's bevy of obscure indispensables.

If I Had A Hammer

If I Had A Hammer

Words and Music by
L. Hays and P. Seeger, 1958

1st Verse

If I had a hammer

I'd hammer in the morning

I'd hammer in the evening ... all over this land,

I'd hammer out danger

I'd hammer out a warning

I'd hammer out love between my brothers and sisters

All over this land.

2nd  Verse

If I had a bell

3rd Verse

If I had a song

4th Verse

I've got a hammer

And I've got a bell

And I've got a song to sing ... all over this land,

It's a hammer of justice

It's a bell of freedom

It's a song about love between my brothers & sisters

All over this land.

This song was written, or at least, released in 1958 and
became a popular protest song in an increasingly uncertain time.

Some of the news events of 1958 through early 1964 revolved around:
*Vietnam

*Chuck Berry being indicted for tax evasion

*Little Richard becoming a minister

*Martin Luther King Jr. delivering his "I Have a Dream" speech to a Washington, D.C. Civil Rights rally

*President JFK being shot in Dallas

*Jack Ruby shooting Lee Harvey Oswald

*LBJ being sworn in as president

*The Beatles arriving in America . . .

My message today is, "If I had a hammer."

Jeremiah 23:

28. The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? saith the LORD.

29. Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?

With all of the latest advances in technology, we still find ourselves sorting thru the rubble for a more secure and meaningful way of living.  It is in these times of searching that we cry out; "If I had a hammer, I'd hammer all day long until I had hammered out a better world in which to live."

THE BIBLE is not silent on matters that concern the problems of humanity:

Noah – If I had a hammer, I'd build an ark.

Moses – If I had a hammer, I'd build a bridge.

Joshua – If I had a hammer, I'd build a city of refuge.

Gideon – If I ha a hammer, I'd build a strong wheat bin.

Boaz – If I had a hammer, I'd build a home for Ruth and Naomi.

David – If I had a hammer, I'd build a casket for Goliath.

Solomon – If I had a hammer, I'd build a temple for God.

Nehemiah – If I had a hammer, I'd build a wall.

Namaan – If I had a hammer, I'd build a gallows.

Abraham -- If I had a hammer I'd build a city

Peter – If I had a hammer, I'd build a tabernacle.

JESUS CHRIST BECAME THE HAMMER OF GOD

His words smashed against the theories of man like the mighty blows of a giant sledgehammer.
Jesus was the hammer; eternity the anvil; and man the material used to build a kingdom that would last forever.

HE BECAME:

Noah's hammer building an Ark of Salvation.

Joshua's hammer building a city of refuge.

Moses' hammer building a bridge across the gap of eternity.

Gideon's hammer building a receptacle for the bread of heaven.

Boaz's hammer building an inheritance and home for His bride.

David's hammer building a casket for all our enemies.

Solomon's hammer building a temple for the Holy Ghost.

Nehemiah's hammer building a wall of protection thru His name.

Namaan's hammer building a gallows for those who fight the truth.

Abraham's hammer building a city which John saw coming down.

Peter's hammer building a tabernacle of flesh.

People often lament today,
"If I could, if I only had the ability and capability, if I only had a hammer,
I'd build a world of peace, harmony, equality and love."

JESUS IS THE HAMMER THAT BUILDS A WORLD LIKE THAT!

When He stood after His resurrection, waving the keys,
He was saying:
"I'VE GOT A HAMMER!"

Engage this carpenter from Nazareth.
Let Him use His demolition hammer to tear down the unwanted areas of your life.
Next, He will use His finishing hammer to build an eternal house, fully furnished for your living pleasure.

You will enjoy your new accommodations!

Your Defining Declaration

Historically there have been lengthy contracts that have defined either a company or a country, and there have been short sentences that have just as clearly defined a man or a mission.

This message will simply set forth some of these defining declarations and trust them to impact your live to the point where you will be moved to utter your own defining declaration. Since there are so many examples, I will not even attempt to include them all; just enough to put you onto the scent.

Sir Winston Churchill said, in a Radio Broadcast on Feb. 9, 1941,"Here is the answer which I will give to Pres. Roosevelt .... Give us the tools and we will finish the job."

In a speech to the Canadian Senate and House of Commons on Dec. 30, 1941 he said, "When I warned the French that Britain would fight on alone whatever they did, their generals told their prime minister and his divided cabinet, ‘In three weeks England will have her neck wrung like a chicken.' Some chicken; some neck."

F.D.R. in his first Inaugural Address on Mar. 4, 1933 said, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."

Patrick Henry, in a speech on Mar. 23, 1775 said, "I know not what course others may take; but as for me give me liberty or give me death."

Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "I have a dream."

J.F.K. said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country."

The words of these men have been a source of inspiration to many over the years. They were defining declarations.

Clint Eastwood's words, in Dirty Harry, "Go ahead make my day" became his defining declaration.

There comes a juncture in every person's life when a decision is made which colors everything else that person does.

Let's look at some defining moments in the lives of some Bible characters:

The Prodigal Son - "I will arise and go."

Isaiah - "Here am I, send me."

Jesus - "Stay here, I will go farther."

We humans are famous for ‘one-up-manships.'   But, Jesus always goes farther.

Ex. - ‘Where sin did abound, grace did much more abound.'  ‘When the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of God is there to lift up a standard against it.'

Moses - Ex. 3:3 - "And Moses said, I will now turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt."

Joshua said, - "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."

Jacob said,- "I will not let thee go until you bless me."

Abraham said, - "My son, God will provide Himself a lamb for a burnt offering."

Isaac - Gen. 26:22 - "For now the Lord hath made room for us; and we shall be fruitful in the land."

Aaron - is proclaimed to be the poet laureate of the O.T., but no defining declaration is recorded.

Ex. 4:30 - And Aaron spake all the words which the Lord had spoken unto Moses."

"God said to Moses, I have made thee a god unto Pharaoh and Aaron thy brother shall be thy prophet." - Ex.7:1

Caleb - Nu. 13:30 - "And Caleb stilled the people before Moses and said, Let us go up at once and possess it, for we are well able to overcome it."

David said, - "For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God? Is there not a cause?"

Solomon - 2 Chron. 1:10 - "Give me now wisdom and knowledge, for who can judge this thy people, that is so great?"

Elisha - 2 Ki. 2:9 - "I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me."

Ruth said, - "Whither thou goest,  I will go, and where thou lodgest, I will lodge; thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God."

Job - 19:25 - "For I know that my redeemer liveth."

Daniel - "But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat nor with the wine that he drank."

Gideon - "The sword of the Lord and of Gideon."

Peter - "And Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God."

Paul said, - "Who art thou Lord?"

      It is Jesus!

Have you had a defining moment?

Have you attended a defining meeting?

Have you made a defining declaration?

But Amnon Had A Friend

2 Sam.13:

1. And it came to pass after this, that Absalom the son of David had a fair sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of David loved her.

2. And Amnon was so vexed, that he fell sick for his sister Tamar; for she was a virgin; and Amnon thought it hard for him to do anything to her.

3. But Amnon had a friend...

Introduction:

There are so many examples in the Bible and quotes from noted writers about the importance of choosing good friends that they would fill a book rather than a sermon; so, I shall be compelled to forego most of them and simply amplify this short phrase, "But Amnon had a friend."

Amnon's Personal Problem

He lusted after his own half-sister, Tamar.

He wanted to be with her in a love relationship, but he knew it wasn't proper.

Amnon's Friend

Verse 2 tells us, "...it was hard for him to do anything to her!"

He may not have ever touched her on his own.

BUT AMNON HAD A FRIEND!

Consider The Jake Brake On Amnon's Wagon

Something kept this young man from completely selling out.

Amnon Had a Reputation

Amnon was the King's son.

When Amnon considered his reputation, it stopped him from sinning.

BUT AMNON HAD A FRIEND!

Amnon Wasn't A Department Store Dummy

He knew the law.

He knew the Word of God.

His own father, King David, had penned these words, "Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking thereto according to thy Word." (Ps.119:9)

Amnon had an understanding of God's Word, and it had kept him from sinning.

BUT AMNON HAD A FRIEND!

Amnon Had a Conscience

When verse 2 says he thought it hard to do anything to Tamar.

His conscience would have stopped him this time, too.

BUT AMNON HAD A FRIEND!

Due to the influence of Amnon's friend, he raped his own sister and brought shame on himself, on his sister, and on his whole family.

Look At The Aftermath Of Amnon's Sin

1.On Tamar

Verse 20 tells us, "So Tamar remained desolate in her brother Absalom's house."

She never had children.

She was emotionally scarred for the rest of her life.

Her life was ruined.

"BUT AMNON HAD A FRIEND!"

2. On Absalom

Absalom was destined to ascend to the throne.

Absalom was a wise judge, but his heart  burned with hatred toward Amnon for sinning against his sister.

Absalom had a party and invited Amnon.

There he killed Amnon, then he fled from the wrath of the king.

Absalom was destined for much better things.

BUT AMNON HAD A FRIEND!

Now, what about your friends?

The Influence Of Friends

Amos 3:3 "Can two walk together unless they be agreed?"   NO!

Prov.13:20 "He that walketh with wise men shall be wise..."

"...but a companion of fools shall be destroyed."

There are many more followers in the human race than there are leaders. Thus the majority of us are influenced by other people.

Find the average person on drugs and ask them, "When did you first start doing drugs?"

Most will say, "When I was in high school, I had this friend..." They never would have started doing drugs, BUT THEY HAD A FRIEND!

Go to one who is an alcoholic and ask them, "When did you take your first drink?"

They will probably say, "Well, I was back in Jr. High School, and I had this friend..."

They never would have become an alcoholic, BUT THEY HAD A FRIEND!

Go to one who is addicted to tobacco in the respiratory ward of a hospital and and ask them, "When did you start smoking?"

They will say, "Back when I was 17 years old, I had a friend that I worked with..."

They never would have smoked their first cigarette, BUT THEY HAD A FRIEND!

Look At Your Friends, You Will See Your Future

Amos 3:3

"Can two walk together, except they be agreed?"

You can't walk together with them if you don't agree.

If you DO agree, then you will be just like them.

Birds Of A Feather Flock Together.

Some Friends Give Poor Counsel.

You would think that Jonadab would have given good counsel to Amnon, but Jonadab wasn't interested in helping Amnon to remain pure.

Jonadab was more interested in pleasing him.

Jonadab counseled Amnon to fulfill the lust of the flesh when he should have been helping him control such lust.

Sometimes The Best Friends Give The Worst Advice

That doesn't mean that all friends are bad.

We Need Friends who will pray for us and remind us what the Bible says, as well as live a godly life before us.

We Need the Right Kind of Influence

1 Cor.15:33

“Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.”

This is one of the reasons that we need the church.

We need a place to fellowship with others who walk in truth.

Jesus Is Our Best Friend

Matt.28:20 - ‘and, lo, I am with you always.'

We need a friend who will help us go in the right direction, regardless of the cost.

And we find such a person in Jesus Christ.

Reflecting what He does for us, let us MAKE GOOD FRIENDS AND BE A GOOD FRIEND.

May someone say of you; I would have gone the wrong way, BUT I HAD A FRIEND.

THE RETURN OF THE DOVE

We have all heard stories about pets that have crossed hundreds of miles to be re-united with their human families.

Every year we marvel at the return of the swallows to Capastrano

We are aware of the migratory skills of birds and fish.

Let us consider The Return of the Dove.

The Dove is recognized as a type of the Holy Ghost, the Spirit of God.

Early in the account of Genesis, it is recorded “the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters”-Gen. 1:2

Various words are used for the word “moved”- such as hovered, fluttered, stirred, or brooded.

And just a little farther on, “And the Lord said, My Spirit shall not always strive with man”-Gen. 6:3

NEB= My life-giving spirit shall not remain in man forever.

Eccl. 12:7= “And the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.”

So let’s set up the typology for this message: “The Return of the Dove”

THE ARK= is the type of the Lord Jesus Christ.

THE DOVE= is the type of the Holy Ghost.

The Spirit has been active in the world from the very beginning,

BUT IN VARIOUS WAYS:

As a brooding mother bird in Gen. 1,

As a cloud and fire for direction in the wilderness,

As an afterglow on Sinai,

As the Shechinah glory in the Tabernacle, and

As the rain-cloud on Carmel.

BUT THE SPIRIT ALWAYS RETURNED HOME.

Let us consider some Dove data before we proceed any further:

The dove and the pigeon are the same family.

The smaller members are called doves.

The larger members are called pigeons.

This bird is a swift flier.

They are usually gentle- but can fight viciously.

The mourning dove gets it’s name from the soft, sad, cooing call of the male.

It feeds on grain, grass, and weed seeds.

It is a devoted mate.

It builds a flimsy nest.

The dove is the symbol of PEACE.

In most bids the male is the most attractive.

But in the dove, male and female are so much alike in color and appearance that it is hard to tell them apart.

Birds, as a whole, have the best vision of all animals.

Their eyes are relatively large, sometimes weighing more than the brain and have exceptionally acute resolution.

Predatory species have binocular (telescoping, opera-glasses) vision.

Most other birds have partially binocular vision.

Color perception in birds is excellent.

Gen. 8:8-10, 12

This is the account of the spies which Noah sent out to bring him intelligence from abroad:

A raven and a dove

1.  Noah sent forth the Raven

“which went forth to and fro”

That is, “going forth and returning”

Or flying about but returning to the Ark for rest

2. Noah sent forth the Dove

“but the dove returned him” verse 9

7 days later: - Again he sent out the Dove

“and the dove returned with an olive leaf”

14 days later from the first expedition

“he sent forth the dove which returned not again unto him any more”

The dove flies low.

The Ark came to rest on mountain top.

The Christian is not at home in the high places of the world.

Verse 10= “stayed-(patiently abode)- yet other 7 days”

Have you noticed yourself just living from one church service to the next?

The Dove had something in its mouth.

It had an olive leaf, which grows on lower hills and plains, but not on mountains.

The Dove went down to where man lives.

God's Spirit came down to us.

The Bible says the dove "Plucked off" a leaf---not a loose leaf or a floating twig,

It was a living olive tree.

Olive leaves keep green under water.

Peace will blossom under any circumstances.

When the dove lands on you, it has something in its mouth.

You will speak with other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance.

Peace is still the music of the soul.

It is the calm sunset of a summer’s Sunday.

It is the olive-branch- sign of judgment abating.

It is Jerusalem-i.e., vision of peace.

It is Melchidezec- King of righteousness, King of peace.

-G.S. Bowes

Psalms 55:6- “O that I had wings like a dove, for then would I fly, and be at rest.”

The Psalmist was so surrounded that the only way out was “on the wing.”

Not the wings of an hawk- that dives upon it’s prey,

But the wings of a dove- that flies swiftly.

It doesn’t have to be a long flight,

Just as long as I escape from my enemies.

The Spirit provides that escape for us.

The classical writers of Greece and Rome made frequent allusions to the speed of the dove.

Have you ever noticed how quickly the Lord can come alongside you when you need help?

Sophocles compared her to a whirlwind.

Kimchi says the reason the Psalmist prefers the dove to other birds was, that while other birds became weary while flying and land of a rock or a tree to regain their strength,

The dove, when she is tired, alternately rests one wing and flies with the other,

And by this means escapes from the swiftest pursuers.

Psalms 68:3- “Tho ye have lien among the pots yet shall ye be as the wings of a dove covered with silver and her feathers with yellow gold.”

Silver= redemption

Gold= divinity

Song of Solomon 1:15- “Thou has doves’ eyes.”

Seeing thru the eyes of the Spirit

What a view!

See all the enemies beaten.

See an immortal body.

See what “eyes cannot see.”

Song of Solomon 4:1- “Thou has doves’ eyes within thy locks”

Song of Solomon 2:14- “Oh my dove, thou art in the clefts of the rock, in the secret places of the stairs let me see thy countenance, let me hear thy voice: for sweet is thy voice, and thy countenance is comely.”

The invitation that Jesus gives to each of us is the communion with Him.

Christ is the Rock.

His Spirit takes us unto Him.

Song of Solomon 5:2- “I sleep, but my heart waketh: it is the voice of my beloved that knocketh, saying, Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my undefiled: for my head is filled with dew, and my locks with the drops of the night.”

This is the bride speaking.

She said, I went to sleep.  He came to my door,

But by the time I got awake, He was gone.

So, she went thru the streets looking for Him.

If you lose the Spirit, you will never find a substitute.

Song of Solomon 6:9- “My dove, my undefiled is but one.”

There is only ONE CHURCH.

And there is no other segment of society that compares with His church.

The Dove has not yet returned to The Ark in Heaven.

God’s Spirit is in His Church.

“She is the only one of her mother.”

“Jerusalem which is above”

See Matthew 3:16, Mark 1:10, Luke 3:22

John 1:32- “And John bare record saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven, like a dove, and it abode upon Him.”

THE SAME IS HE WHICH BAPTIZETH WITH THE HOLY GHOST.

Romans 8:11- “But if the Spirit of Him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, He that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by His Spirit that dwelleth in you.”

The Spirit will RETURN to God.

If the Spirit dwells in me, I WILL GO ALSO.

I LOOK FORWARD TO THE RETURN OF THE DOVE.
